I really recommend that you pluck the chords for the verse and a soft strum for chorus. The song has a fast chord change since it is mainly using a piano in the original recording. But who says we have to play with the original tempo of the song? lol. I find it better suits the guitar when I play this song at a slower tempo than the original song.

[intro]
D A G
...........
D A Gmaj7
...............

[verse 1]
                  D A G
Called you on the phone today.....
                   D A G
Just to ask you how you were.....
                     D A G
All I did was speak normally.....
                 D A G
Somehow I still struck a nerve.....
                            D A Gmaj7
You got me f****d up in the head, boy.........
                D A Gmaj7
Never doubted myself so much......
                        D A G
I got my pretty and my fun boy......
                       D A Gmaj7
I hate that I give you power, or, that kind of stuff

[chorus]
                   D F#m G D
'Cause it's always one step forward and three steps back
        D F#m G D
I'm the love of your life until I make you mad
            D F#m G D
It's always one step forward and three steps back
       D F#m G D
Do you love me, want me, hate me, boy? I don't understand
      G D
No, I don't understand

[verse 2]
D A G
And maybe in some masochistic way
D A Gmaj7
I could've find it all exciting
    D A Gmaj7
Like which lover will I get today?
          D A Gmaj7
Will you walk me to the door or send me home crying

[chorus]
                   D F#m G D
'Cause it's always one step forward and three steps back
        D F#m G D
I'm the love of your life until I make you mad
            D F#m G D
It's always one step forward and three steps back
       D F#m G D
Do you love me, want me, hate me, boy? I don't understand

[bridge]
         D F#m G D
No, it's back and forth, did I say something wrong?
     D F#m G D
It's back and forth, going over everything I said
     D F#m G D
It's back and forth, did I do something wrong?
     D F#m G D
It's back and forth, baby, this is all your fault

[last chorus]
             D F#m G D
Instead it's one step forward and three steps back
        D F#m G D
And I'd leave you but the roller coaster is all I've ever had
     D F#m G D
It's one step forward and three steps back
       D F#m
Do you love me, want me, hate me, boy?
  G D
I don't understand
      G D
No, I don't understand
